SOME OF OUR MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...

A nice winter Rainbow on the Switch Rod

WHY IS THE WATER GREEN?

The water is green due to the fact that our river systems are glacial in nature.  'Glacial Flower' or silt is deposited into small tributaries of the waters of the Kenai and Kasilof rivers as they melt during the summer months.  This silt mixes with rain and snow melt to create the green or turquoise color you see.  The water can range from almost dark grey to clear, depending on the amount of silt and/or rain and snow melt.

DO YOU HAVE TO ROW BACK UPSTREAM?

Fortunately we do not have to row back up the river once we begin our descent.  Luckily, we have a network of shuttle drivers and services in the area that will move our vehicles from our starting point, to our final destination.

CAN I KEEP THAT FISH?

When referring to Salmon, the answer is generally "it depends."  Even during the peak of the salmon runs, each fish that is legally caught according to Alaska State Fish and Game laws is graded for consumption.  More often than not, Salmon are very edible through their life cycle in the river up until the point they begin to stage for spawning.  Keep in mind that Emergency Orders can override any regulations in the book and are checked on a daily basis.

If you're talking about Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Arctic Grayling, Lake Trout, Whitefish and other species, the answer will always be no.  All of the fish we target are wild and are native to Alaska.  They are extremely special to us, and unlike other areas of the country that are considered "put and take," our fisheries are largely considered "catch and release" by guides and avid anglers.  We go to great lengths to protect fish through the entire process by using barbless hooks and keeping them in the water as long as possible.
