KENAI RIVER TROUT FISHING

Kenai River Trout Fishing Charters.jpg

Kenai River trout anglers flock to our area every year. The Kenai produces some of the biggest and most catches of Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden in Alaska. Kenai River Rainbow Trout season opens up on June 11th. The season runs until the following May when the river closes for the trout spawn. All trout species are catch and release per Cooper Landing Fishing Guide, LLC’s policy.

Fishing tours for trout on Alaska’s Kenai River can be great most of the year. The fall months produce the greatest number of fish and potential size. Savvy Anglers know the fall months of August, September and October can land them dozens of fish. It is also the best time to catch a trophy 30” monster with our Alaska river trout fishing guides!

Both spin fishing and fly fishing work well for our area trout.

where we catch rainbow trout

Catching Rainbow Trout on the Kenai River

If the Kenai River is open for fishing, you can bet we’re probably out there fishing for trout. We fish with our guests on guided trips and we fish on our own for fun when on off days. We fish most of the Kenai River for trout at different times of year. Wherever the best trout fishing is on the Kenai on that day, that’s where we want to take you.

Rainbow Trout are plentiful on the Upper Kenai, Middle Kenai and Lower Kenai. Rainbow Trout have outstanding habitat, spawning grounds and food sources. This produces giant trout which brings people from all ofer the world to our river system

ANGLING FOR kenai river trophy trout on spin or fly gear

Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing Gear

The best rig for Kenai River rainbow trout angling can sometimes be spinning gear or fly fishing gear. It all depends on where the trout are, what they are feeding on and if you are fishing from a boat or from the shore (the depth of the water can play a role here as well). Fly fishing and conventional fishing techniques can be great for trout fishing in Alaska. Alaska is a great place to learn to fly fish, but it is not necessary for successful trout fishing outings.

The best way to catch trout in a river can often be with the same gear and methods you are most comfortable with. Trout and Dolly Varden in Alaska generally don’t require heavy gear and we don’t need bait.

Trout are the perfect species to target on your Kenai River fly fishing excursion.

Not to be outdone by their cousins, Dolly Varden (Char) are also plentiful in the waters of the Kenai River.

Taking a Kenai River Trout Fishing Excursion also means there’s a good chance you’ll run into Dolly Varden. Dollies are similar to trout in that they often require the same habitat and food sources. If you are trout fishing, you will definitely catch several Dolly Varden. They are aggressive, hard fighters and can be quite beautiful.

Dollies in the 10-15” range are quite common with some reaching 25 inches or more!

You’re sure to encounter plenty of Dollies on your Kenai Trout Angling Adventures.
