July in alaska is when things really start to pick up with both the numbers of Salmon entering area rivers and the number of tourists visiting the state. SALMON FISHING IN ALASKA CAN BE INCREDIBLE AT TIMES.

The second run of King Salmon and Sockeye Salmon start to hit the river in big daily pushes of fish. The second runs of both Kings and Sockeye IN JULY are usually many times larger than the first runs, in both quantity of fish and size of fish. Some days IN JULY, we could have as many as 30 or 50,000 Sockeye Salmon entering the Kenai River, on one tide! This makes fishing in Alaska in July one of the most exciting months of the year.

Starting in early July (near July 1st), the second run of King Salmon enters the river systems (Kenai and Kasilof Rivers). These are typically larger fish than those of the first run of Kings. Due to low return rates over the past few years with the second run of King Salmon, we do not fish for them; however, if you are looking to harvest fish, the second run of Sockeye Salmon on the Kenai River can be a great run of fish to target for filling your freezer.

Around the 15th or so of July on the Kenai River in Alaska, the second run of Sockeye Salmon makes their way into the river from the ocean. Some days, we can see as many as 50,000 fish or more entering the river on one tide. The second run of Sockeye Salmon usually ranges from 6-12 lbs and are not only great table fare, they are also incredibly strong, challenging even the strongest fishing tackle.

An interesting thing also happens in July that not many anglers know about. Rainbow Trout fishing in mid to late-July can be quite good. Sockeye anglers will clean their fish and deposit carcasses and egg skeins into the Kenai River offering Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden a chance to gorge themselves on this new food source. The bite can last for about 2-3 weeks, but it offers a great alternative to the salmon fishing that is so popular in July. There are many hot spots for this “flesh bite” in Cooper Landing, Sterling and Soldotna.

The best fishing in July in Alaska starts around the 15th , when the second run of Sockeye Salmon begin to make big pushes into the Kenai River - essentially making Sockeye fishing excellent almost anywhere you fish on the Kenai River. Some of the best Rainbow Trout fishing in July can be done with dry flies, streamers, drifting beads and flesh flies. Flesh flies are particularly effective in July in “fresher” patterns due to the sheer amount of fish that are being filleted and thrown back into the river. July is also one of the best times to fish in Alaska in the Ocean for Halibut, Ling Cod, Rock Fish and more!
