December fishing in Alaska and on the Kenai River poses a few challenges. The days are the shortest they’ll be all year, the weather is unpredictable and the shoreline can be icy, etc… Despite the challenges of winter fishing in Alaska, December can produce some nice trout. Remember: with freezing temperatures, it is not recommended that anglers remove trout from the water. Also, targeting and removing Silver Salmon is illegal this time of year.

Here are some tips on Landing Big Fish from our guide blog. Learn more about our Kenai River Fishing Guide service.

NOVEMBER 2020 ALASKA FISHING REPORT
KENAI RIVER, KASILOF RIVER AND RUSSIAN RIVER

November fishing in Alaska and on the Kenai River specifically can be very good. As some Silver Salmon (Coho Salmon) begin to spawn, a renewed “bead-bite” can often occur making the trout fishing good to great. Simultaneously, flesh from dead and decaying salmon will provide a great sustained food source for trout and dolly varden. This is a great time of year to target and land big fish.

Typically, most salmon fishing is closed during November, so most anglers choose to target trout and dolly varden this time of year.

November weather can be quite harsh, so be sure to prepare for cold temperatures, icy boat ramps and shorter days on the water.

As the Sockeye Salmon and Pink Salmon spawn of September dies down, Trout turn to eating salmon flesh, leeches, insects and small fish again. Trout fishing during October can still be outstanding as there is usually an abundance of food in the river from all of the dead salmon.

October is also a great time to continue to fish for the second run of Coho (Silver) Salmon. Usually the traffic on the Kenai River and Kasilof River has died down and the weather can get a little raw, but the fishing can still be outstanding.

AUGUST 2020 ALASKA FISHING REPORT

August Fishing in Alaska

August is the time of year when the last Sockeye Salmon enter the Kenai River, Kasilof River and Russian River. Many anglers are able to fish for Sockeye a week or so into August.

Angling efforts shift from Sockeye Salmon as the month goes on to Coho (Silver) Salmon. With each tide, more and more Silvers show up making August one of the best months for Silver Salmon fishing.

2020 is a “Pink Year,” where millions of Pink Salmon enter the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers. This makes for excellent Rainbow Trout/Dolly Varden Fishing. Look towards the end of August for this to begin to materialize.

The days get shorter in August, but the fishing keeps getting better and better as September aproaches.

AUGUST 18, 2020 - LOWER KENAI RIVER REPORT - Pink Salmon are hitting the river in big numbers lately. There are still some Sockeye Salmon around if you can find them among all of the Pinks. Coho (Silver) Salmon fishing is starting to pick up, but many anglers are reporting slow action for them.

MIDDLE KENAI RIVER REPORT - Sockeye Salmon are still being caught on the Middle Kenai River. Lots of Pink Salmon have shown up and some may be spawning in pockets. Silvers have been caught here and there, but with the opening of bait, expect Silver fishing to be slow. Trout fishing is improving and will only get better as we get into late-August/September.

UPPER KENAI RIVER REPORT - The “Upper Upper Kenai River” (Bridge to Sportsman’s Landing) has been fishing good for Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden. Very few Silvers have been spotted, so it may be a bit too early for them.

KASILOF RIVER REPORT - Sockeye Salmon are still present on the Kasilof River. Most anglers have switched to targeting Silver Salmon (Coho Salmon). Some days are good and others are a little bit slow. MIDDLE KENAI RIVER REPORT - Middle Kenai River Sockeye Salmon fishing is good and improving by the day as many anglers are posting daily limits. This section of river is seeing heavy angling pressure with lots and lots of power boats “shopping” the banks for a good Sockeye fishing spot. Trout fishing on the Middle Kenai is good as more and more food is present with filleting of salmon.

UPPER KENAI RIVER REPORT - (NO CHANGE) The “Upper Upper Kenai River” (Bridge to Sportsman’s Landing) is seeing more pressure from trout anglers and salmon anglers. Sockeye Salmon are present. If you happen to get out on the water immediately after commercial fishing pressure, you may find painfully slow days. If you happen to fish 2 or 3 tides after the commercial fishing has ended, you will find lots and lots of Sockeye Salmon entering the Kasilof River.

King Salmon fishing on the Kasilof has been moderately slow, but anglers are still netting big 2nd run King Salmon. Remember, it is important to release big spawning fish, especially wild hens. With bait closed, these behemoths are still hard to come by.

7/10/2020 - LOWER KENAI RIVER REPORT - More second run King Salmon are being caught as the month of July progresses. The action is still slow and there are lots of boats out their chasing the elusive and often massive 2nd run Kenai River King Salmon. Early 2nd run Sockeye Salmon has been improving by the day as more and more fish enter the Kenai River.

UPPER KENAI RIVER REPORT - The “Upper Upper Kenai River” (Bridge to Sportsman’s Landing) has been fishing well (ok to good fishing) lately and is still seeing light pressure. There are no significant signs of 2nd run Sockeye Salmon showing up just yet.

The “Upper Kenai River Refuge” (Sportsman’s Landing to Jim’s Landing/Lower Skilak Lake Campground) continues to be painfully slow for Sockeye Salmon. The first run of Sockeye destined for the Russian River has all but ended. Rainbow Trout/Dolly Varden continues to be decent.

MIDDLE KENAI RIVER REPORT - The Middle Kenai River is seeing light pressure for Rainbow Trout and Sockeye Salmon fishing. Anglers are reporting a few Sockeye caught here and there and the 2nd run hasn’t “shown up” just yet.

RUSSIAN RIVER REPORT - The first run of Sockeye Salmon (as awful as it was) is all but over. There is very light angling pressure all along the river. Several folks are attempting to Sockeye fish. Others are choosing to catch and release fish for Rainbow Trout. Expect some 2nd run Sockeye Salmon to start to show up within the next 10 days or so.

KASILOF RIVER REPORT - If you fish the tides after heavy commercial fishing and dipnetting, expect slower than usual Sockeye Salmon fishing. The run of Sockeye Salmon on the Kasilof River has been excellent. But, liberalization of commercial fishing has lead to a few days of very slow action.

The second run of King Salmon on the Kasilof River has begun to show. We are seeing several fish caught in the 35-45lb range. Some big healthy hens thankfully being released to spawn. Action is still slow with no bait and single hook.

7/5/2020 - LOWER KENAI RIVER REPORT - Lots of boats have been King Salmon fishing over the July 4th weekend. Very few King Salmon were spotted being caught. Second run Sockeye Salmon have started to show up as well.

UPPER KENAI RIVER REPORT - The “Upper Upper Kenai River” (Bridge to Sportsman’s Landing) is still seeing light pressure and the Rainbow Trout/Dolly Varden fishing has been fair to good.

The “Upper Kenai Refuge” (Sportsman’s Landing to Jim’s Landing/Lower Skilak Lake Camground) has seen better Rainbow Trout/Dolly Varden fishing. The Sockeye Salmon fishing is dismal due to a low return and low water conditions.

RUSSIAN RIVER REPORT - The Russian River Sanctuary is closed (Kenai River Confluence) as a part of a recent Emergency Order issued by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Only around 15,000 Sockeye Salmon have made it past the weir on the Russian River as a part of the fish count procedure.

Anglers on the Russian River have reported very few Sockeye Salmon. The Rainbow Trout fishing has been pretty good.

KASILOF RIVER REPORT - Recent commercial fishing efforts have stalled what looks to be a great run of Sockeye Salmon on the Kasilof River (at least for July 4th). Anglers have reported a slow down over the past few days with the nets being out. Very few second run King Salmon have been caught as well. Kasilof River Fish Count

On the morning tide on 7/5/2020, anglers reported much better Sockeye Salmon fishing than the previous 2 days.

7/1/2020 - LOWER KENAI RIVER REPORT - Today marked the re-opening of the Kenai River to King Salmon Fishing on the lower river. Most anglers reported very few fish being caught and lots and lots of boats on the water. A slow and sluggish start to the second run of fish to say the least on the Lower Kenai River.

UPPER KENAI RIVER REPORT - The Upper Upper Kenai River (Bridge to Sportsman’s Landing) is still seeing very light pressure. There has been good Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden action. The Upper Kenai River Refuge (Sportsman’s Landing to Jim’s Landing and/or Upper Skilak Campground) is still very slow for Sockeye Salmon. Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden fishing is improving. It is still slow and spotty though.

RUSSIAN RIVER REPORT - Still very weak numbers of Sockeye Salmon returning to the Russian River as of this report. Anglers are telling us that they are seeing very few, if any catch-able Sockeye Salmon. Rainbow Trout fishing on dry flies and nymphs, etc… has been good.

KASILOF RIVER REPORT - July 1st marks the start of the second run of King Salmon on the Kasilof River. Anglers are reporting very few second run fish so far with a few first run fish being caught daily.

Sockeye Salmon fishing on the Kasilof River continues to be steady from the outlet of Tustumena Lake all the way to the lower holes of the lower river. Despite commercial fishing pressure and dipnetting taking place, anglers are still reporting good numbers of fish being caught and good odds at limits as of late.

JUNE 2020 ALASKA FISHING REPORT
KENAI RIVER, KASILOF RIVER AND RUSSIAN RIVER

June Fishing in Alaska Report

6/29/2020 - Much of the same conditions for all the previously reported rivers and their sections. Sockeye fishing on the Kenai River continues to be decent near the confluence. The Russian River is fishing really tough. Trout fishing on the upper Kenai River (bridge to Sportsman’s Landing) has been steady. It is also improving on the upper Kenai River Refuge (Sportsman’s Landing to Jim’s landing and/or Upper Skilak Lake Campground). The Kasilof River King Salmon fishing is fair while Sockeye Fishing is good to great on some days.

6/27/2020 - RUSSIAN RIVER REPORT - Despite better numbers of Sockeye Salmon reaching the weir on the Russian River over the past few days, anglers are still reporting very slow action. At the confluence with the Kenai River, anglers are having a little more success hooking up and limiting.

UPPER KENAI RIVER REPORT - The “Upper Upper Kenai River” (bridge to Sportsman’s Landing) is experiencing very little pressure. The trout fishing has been decent. The higher water has lead to a bit harder fishing conditions, but rewarding when you find the fish.

The Upper Kenai Refuge (Sportsman’s Landing to Jim’s Landing and/or Upper Skilak Lake Campground Boat Launch) has been a little better lately for Sockeye Salmon. Fish are stubborn to move and are hold up in small pockets. They are starting to turn a little blush with their extended journey due to low water. Anglers are reporting decent action but lots and lots of pressure from anglers.

MIDDLE KENAI RIVER REPORT - Higher water and less food is making the trout fishing spotty here as well. Anglers who spend more time hitting certain “hotter” holes are finding fish. The Rainbows are starting to spread out before the return of the second run of Sockeye Salmon.

KASILOF RIVER REPORT - King Salmon on the Kasilof River has been very slow lately. The first run of fish is all but over and the second run of bigger King Salmon should be showing up soon. The Sockeye Salmon fishing on the Kasilof has been good and steady lately. This is despite dipnetting and commercial fishing taking place.

6/21/2020 - RUSSIAN RIVER REPORT - Slow action along the banks of the Russian River was reported yesterday. Small pockets of fish have been spotted. Only a few bursts of fish are coming up from the confluence area with the Kenai River.

UPPER KENAI RIVER REPORT - The “Upper Upper Kenai River” (bridge to Sportsman’s Landing) is still seeing very light pressure. It is producing a few Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden. Fishing is decent along this stretch.

The Upper Kenai River Refuge (Sportsman’s Landing to Jim’s Landing and/or Upper Skilak Lake Campground Boat Launch) has been fishing well for Sockeye Salmon. Greater numbers of fish showing up daily. It is by no means on fire, but there are Sockeye Salmon to be caught. The Rainbow Trout/Dolly Varden fishing continues to be slower.

MIDDLE KENAI RIVER REPORT - The Middle Kenai River (Lower Skilak Lake Campground to Bing’s Landing) is still fishing well for Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden. The lower water is concentrating fish more, making this one of the better Junes we’ve had in a while.

KASILOF RIVER REPORT - The Kasilof River is still producing a great early run of Sockeye Salmon to help supplement a rather slow run and catch rate of King Salmon.

6/20/2020 - RUSSIAN RIVER REPORT - Anglers reported seeing good pushes of Sockeye Salmon the past couple of days. Anglers went hours without seeing fish. Some groups of Sockeye Salmon (a hundred or so at a time) came through at just the right time. Several anglers reported catching their limits. Trout fishing remains pretty good on dry flies, nymphs and streamers.

UPPER KENAI REPORT - The Upper Upper Kenai River (Bridge to Sportsman’s Landing) remains pretty good for trout fishing. There are no Sockeye Salmon present (as to be expected this time of year)

The Upper Kenai River Refuge (Sportsman’s Landing to Upper Skilak Lake Campground) finally started producing good numbers of Sockeye Salmon. Several anglers reported multiple hookups and limits. It has been quite crowded lately. Be sure to arrive early and be patient with other anglers, pedestrians, wildlife and boats. The Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden fishing has been decent, but is still slow.

KASILOF RIVER REPORT - The Kasilof River has seen good pushes of Sockeye Salmon lately. Fish have been caught from the lake all the way to the tidal water. King Salmon fishing is still moderately slow with a few Kings being caught. Not many are coming in on the tides lately. This makes the Kasilof predominantly a Sockeye Salmon fishery at the moment.

Mike Fisher Cooper Landing Fishing Guide, LLC

6/17/2020 - Some slight improvements in the numbers for the first run of Russian River Sockeye as they make their way up river. Reports from the banks are slow to moderate action with a few fish caught here and there. It is still possible to get a limit, but it is much harder than previous years.

Trout fishing on the middle river continues to be good as well as on the Upper Upper and Refuge.

The Kasilof River is still being stingy with king salmon. It is still closed to bait and is single hook only. The Sockeye Salmon have begun to show up in fishable numbers.

6/16/2020 - The Upper Kenai Refuge showed some signs of a few Sockeye Salmon around in the morning. Then the action came to a standstill later in the afternoon. We were still able to eek out a limit of 3 fish each for 2 anglers, but it was not easy to say the least. The high sun and low water is keeping fish held up in holes and making it less likely for them to move throughout the day.

The Kasilof River is still holding strong. There are good numbers of hatchery King Salmon around. The best lures being K-13 and K-15 Kwikfish and the occasional spin-n-glo. Please remember no bait and single hook only. All wild fish must be released immediately and not removed from the water.

6/15/2020 - Another tough day on the Russian River for Sockeye as only about 414 Sockeye Salmon have passed the weir. Anglers have reported very slim pickings on the Russian River. The confluence area and below has been a little bit better. anglers who fish the entire day have been able to come close to a limit.

Rainbow Trout Fishing is improving on both the upper and middle Kenai River. Few anglers are trout fishing but still focusing on Sockeye Salmon on the Upper. The Middle Kenai is getting busier as the swan sanctuary opens to motors.

6/14/2020 - Another not so great day on the Russian River. Few Sockeye Salmon were caught - most of the anglers we spoke to rarely saw fish let alone had a chance at catching any. The trout fishing still remains pretty good though.

6/13/2020 - A lot has gone on since the closing of the Kenai River to King Salmon fishing. The bait, retention and hook regulations on the Kasilof River. The Kasilof is receiving light pressure, King Salmon have been a little hard to come by. A decent push of King Salmon has started to show up.

June 11th brought on the Rainbow Trout opener on the Upper and Middle Kenai River. Action was a little slow for trout in the refuge. The upper upper Kenai River and the Middle Kenai River have fished nicely.

With the early opening of the confluence of the Russian River and the Kenai River on June 11th, we had expected good numbers of Sockeye Salmon to be caught on the Russian River and Kenai River. Action was decent on the opener. A few fish were caught in the upper stretches of the Russian River. Some of the typical holes they like to hold in along the Russian River.

On the Kenai River below the Russian River, action was steady. It was not hot and heavy. Anglers have struggled to catch a limit. This has made for longer than normal days on the river. Look for action to pick up as more fish will move in soon.

6/8/2020 - NEW EMERGENCY ORDERS RELEASED FOR THE KENAI RIVER AND KASILOF RIVERS FOR KING SALMON AND SOCKEYE SALMON:

6/7/2020 - On back-to-back half day fishing trips on the Kasilof River, we had some of the best King Salmon fishing we’ve had all year. We hooked and landed multiple fish on both trips. There was action from start to finish! Though the Kasilof River is closing to bait soon, the tides continue to bring lots and lots of fish. This has made 2020 the best year for hatchery King Salmon so far in our early history!

King Salmon Fishing Kasilof River.jpg

6/6/2020 - A busy Saturday on the Kasilof, but we managed to hook a nice King Salmon on a two-handed (spey rod) fly rod. Lots of King Salmon were spotted being hooked and rolling in many holes. Holes like the Traps all the way down to Last Chance were good. Lots of kings are coming in on the tide. This is the best King fishing on the Kasilof River many guides have seen in 10 years!

6/4/2020 - We took an evening 6 hour trip on the Kasilof River on Thursday. There were lots of boats and shore anglers. We managed to hook 6 King Salmon and landed 1 (lost one at the boat and one that took us for a wild ride up and around the boat and across the river! - Overall, for a 6 hour afternoon trip, there was lots and lots of action. The weather didn’t disappoint either. Our best setup for the day was spin-n-glos with eggs.

King Salmon Fishing in June in Alaska

6/3/2020 - Probably one of the most active days we’ve had King Salmon fishing of the 2020 season. We hooked 12 fish and had some epic battles all day. The tides seemed to bring in lots of fish. We saw many boats hooking and landing Kings. The Kasilof River fished well from the Traps all the way down through the tide.

6/2/2020 - More action on this day as we had a continuation of our previous trip. We had folks celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary from Wasilla, AK. We had several opportunities on spin-n-glos and eggs and managed to land a nice one before the morning half day was over.

For the second half of the day, we spent the afternoon with the brothers from Midnight Sun Solar. We enjoyed a beautiful evening with lots of King Salmon showing themselves on the surface. None were brought to hand. That evening we also spent time with John from KTVA news. We were highlighting Cooper Landing Fishing Guide, LLC and the impacts of the Coronavirus on the 2020 season as well as the Swan Lake Fire of 2019.

6/1/2020 - It seems that since the first big pushes of King Salmon into the Kasilof River, many guides have been reporting several opportunities a day at hooking up as well as several fish to the boat. The action on June 1st was excellent for Cooper Landing Fishing Guide, LLC with several hook-ups and fish to the boat. We were lucky enough to be out there with some great clients celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary and the fish didn’t disappoint.

Good luck out there! Stay safe and healthy!

MAY 2020 ALASKA FISHING REPORT
KENAI RIVER, KASILOF RIVER AND RUSSIAN RIVER

May Fishing in Alaska

5/25/2020 - May fishing charters have been outstanding thus far, with lots of great folks and plenty of smiles! The King Salmon fishing on the Kasilof River has been pretty good with nice pushes of fish on each tide, making for a good bit of early season action.

The river has also been relatively calm with minimal traffic (except for weekends). We’ve seen multiple fish landed and several hooked as we fish down the river.

It’s been a couple of years since we’ve had this much good action early on in the season and we hope it continues into June!

5/20/2020 - We couldn’t have asked for a nicer start to the month of May! The weather has been outstanding and it appears like the King Salmon season might just be shaping up nicely. The early reports from the Kenai River King Salmon fishing is that the action is fairly slow with only a few caught; however, the action on the Kasilof River has been a bit better with several fish caught each day.

Since the bait opener, we’ve heard of a few boats on the Kasilof River netting kings every day and some boats landing upwards of 3 on one trip! Though it is a little early to tell, this could just be the King Salmon season we’ve been waiting for since the declines of the mid-2000s.

We’ve yet to see the first King Salmon on a fly rod this season, but we’ll be out testing later this week. Most anglers have had good luck on eggs/spin-n-glos as well as sardine-wrapped kwikfish.

Best of luck out there and as always, tight lines!

Kasilof River King Fishing

5/11/2020 - May is officially the time when fishing guides and private anglers alike begin to dust off their boats, get their equipment and fishing rods ready, fix motors and so on. The excitement for the upcoming summer season has been building all winter and it really shows in May!

Most of the fishing opportunities in May center around the first run of salmon coming up the Kenai River and the Kasilof River. Whether you’re into back trolling or fly fishing, the opportunities for the first run of King Salmon on these rivers is certainly a great reason to get out there.

Some things to remember this time of year is that it is still early in the season. There are King Salmon entering the river every day, but in small numbers. Managing expectations this time of year is the key to a great day on the water.

Though fishing for King Salmon opens with bait allowed in mid-May, they can still be caught without bait and with the use of two-handed (spey) fly rods and large flies using shooting heads and sink tips and short leaders.

We will be hitting the water soon checking our gear, scouring the river for fish and making sure we bring that information back to you ASAP.

Hopefully everyone is staying safe and healthy and we wish you a great 2020 fishing season in Alaska!

APRIL 2020 ALASKA FISHING REPORT
KENAI RIVER, KASILOF RIVER AND RUSSIAN RIVER

Kenai River Fishing Report near Cooper Landing April.jpg

4/21/2020 - As a reminder, the Kenai River will close from May 1st - June 11th. There has been an overall increase in the amount of traffic on the Upper Kenai River and Middle Kenai River this April. We hope everyone is practicing proper catch and release protocols and ensuring that these fish are able to successfully spawn this coming May and June. For the future of the resource, it is imperative to limit air exposure, exposure to foreign surfaces and to limit the time you fight these fish.

4/15/2020 - Droves and droves of folks have been fishing the upper Kenai River here in Cooper Landing as well as the Middle Kenai River in Sterling, AK. Right now, it is legal to fish these waters, even with a guide (per clarifications from the governor, fish and game and state parks).

If you do not live in these communities, it is still mandated that if you can find recreation closer to your home town that you partake in recreation near you. Folks should not be traveling from Anchorage to Cooper Landing as there are closer fishing recreation opportunities near Anchorage. Likewise, folks should not be traveling between communities (i.e. from Cooper Landing to Sterling or Soldotna to Cooper Landing, etc.. since there are plenty of fishing opportunities available in those respective communities.

Please, for the sake of our community, we ask that you seriously consider the ramifications of traveling here from an outside community. We are put at higher risk due to these activities.

4/5 2020 - April has started off quite nicely with some excellent weather on the Kenai Peninsula and there have been a good number of folks out hitting the river on a regular basis.

With the current COVID-19 pandemic mandates in place, it is important to only travel when it is an absolute necessity as to not spread the Coronavirus and endanger our fellow anglers and neighbors.

The mandate prohibits travel from long distances for recreation during this time and we ask that you consider whether or not you are traveling to Cooper Landing from areas with a number of Coronavirus cases and whether or not it is necessary. We would like to keep our community safe and healthy at this time.

That being said, the Kenai River is starting to shape up for the start of a good pre-spawn spring season for Rainbow Trout on both the Upper and Middle sections of the river.

During this time of year, it is important to stress even more the importance of handling wild trout with extreme care.

  • Never handle fish with dry hands or gloves

  • Keep fish in the water as long as possible to reduce air exposure

  • Never “beach” a fish, either on dry land or even ice

  • Use barbless hooks of appropriate sizes

  • Minimize the time it takes to land a fish

  • Use a rubber net instead of a hard nylon net

April is a good time to try some nymphs like stoneflies and pheasant tails, etc… You can get away with using larger patterns. As always, Egg Patterns, Flesh Flies and Beads will work this time of year. Swinging flies like woolly buggers, Dave’s Panic Button, Trout Spey Sculpins and Trout Intruders can be deadly during the spring.

Good luck out there! Stay safe and healthy!

MARCH 2020 ALASKA FISHING REPORT
KENAI RIVER, KASILOF RIVER AND RUSSIAN RIVER

Kenai River Fishing Report

March fishing report from the Kenai River near Cooper Landing, AK.

March started off pretty cold and the water has been icy, but lately the weather has been warming up nicely and the fishing should be turning on soon. Even though it’s early spring, we are just starting to run fishing charters on the Kenai River near Cooper Landing.

We’re starting to get into the nymphing pre-spawn fishing methods for Rainbow Trout. Hot patterns this time of year are washed-out micro-flesh flies, washed-out beads, pheasant tail nymphs and stonefly nymphs. Anglers also have lots of success swinging flies for Rainbow Trout as well. Patterns like Dave’s Panic Button work quite well during the spring months. You should also have success with woolly bugger and other smaller streamer patterns.

More river reports coming soon!

FEBRUARY 2020 ALASKA FISHING REPORT
KENAI RIVER, KASILOF RIVER AND RUSSIAN RIVER

Cooper+Landing+Fishing+Guide

Kenai River Fishing Report for February 2020: As the brisk cold from January subsided February gave way to some more mild temperatures towards the end of the month.

With lower flows, the Kenai River really gets more and more fishy as we roll along into March and April. Streamers in white, black, olive and brown still work well, swung on sink tips or stripped across the current.

For the die-hard nymphers out there, beads and flesh flies always work, as well as some generic nymph patterns.

Stay warm out there and we’ll hopefully see you on the water!

JANUARY 2020 ALASKA FISHING REPORT
KENAI RIVER, KASILOF RIVER AND RUSSIAN RIVER

Kenai River Fishing Guide.jpg

Kenai River Fishing Report for January 2020: Happy New Year! It’s probably no secret that it has been extremely cold this month. The outlook looks very similar for the rest of January: Cold, Cold, Cold and even more Cold!

This is a great time to stay inside, tie some flies and keep warm! We’ll be hunkered down in our cabin in Cooper Landing. We do not anticipate getting out much this month, but it is a great time to swing some streamers for hungry and sometimes sluggish Rainbow Trout. Typically this time of year, off-white, brown, black and olive are our go-to colors for streamers in the 2”-4” range. Flows are relatively low, so using t-8 or t-11 should be enough to get down.

This is also a great time to plan your summer trip down the Kenai or Kasilof River. We are steadily taking bookings for the upcoming season and we are certainly filling up fast! We expect to be super busy with not too many days of rest this coming summer!

Best of luck out there and stay warm!

december 2019 ALASKA FISHING REPORT
KENAI RIVER, KASILOF RIVER AND RUSSIAN RIVER

Kenai+River+Fishing+Guides

Kenai River Fishing Report for December: Much like November, December has been relatively mild leading up to the end of the month’s cold snap that is upon us. We have had several opportunities to get out in the boat as well as walk-in opportunities near Cooper Landing.

Our favorite method this time of year is swinging flies for Rainbow Trout and the occasional Dolly Varden on two-handed fly rods. Black, Brown, Olive, White and Flesh are great colors this time of year. It depends on the section of the river, but anything from T8 -T14 on floating lines will help your flies get down into the strike zone.

Several Coho (Silver) Salmon are still spawning, so fresh-looking 8mm beads dead-drifted under an indicator are also a good choice, especially if you are able to target trout from a boat.

Washed-out flesh flies either dead-drifted or swung are also a good choice this time of year. As we head towards January, look for similar conditions with the Coho Salmon Spawn tapering off.

We are currently booking fishing trips for May, June, July, August, September and October! Thank you so much for checking out our Kenai River Fishing Report!

NOVEMBER 2019 ALASKA FISHING REPORT
KENAI RIVER, KASILOF RIVER AND RUSSIAN RIVER

Jackie+Poo+Mountain.jpg

Kenai River Fishing Report for November 2020: November kicked off some of the first and most prolific spawning for Coho (Silver Salmon) on both the Upper and Middle Kenai River. Though we really love to swing flies this time of year, it is really hard to ignore the “bead bite” around spawning salmon.

Cooper Landing Fishing Guide, LLC offers trips during the month of November and it is a great time of year to gt away from the crowds as most private anglers and Kenai River Fishing Guides stay off the river during the winter months.

For flies, check out Dave’s selection of flies HERE. Both swinging and dead-drifting flies, egg patterns and presenting beads under an indicator work really well this time of year. As long as you can stand to be out in the cold, the fish will be willing to cooperate!
