When is the best time to TAKE A fishing trip to Alaska? September is arguably the best month, especially if you are a Trophy Rainbow Trout or Silver (Coho) Salmon angler.

Ocean fishing begins to taper off in mid-september, but the river and stream fishing is nothing short of spectacular!

aLASKA fISHING IN sEPTEMBER

Serious Trout anglers know that the action gets hot come September in Alaska. Of course there are plenty of Trophy Trout to be caught throughout the months leading up to September, but if you’re looking for non-stop action and a realistic chance at landing a big fish and maybe even a measuring tape-stretching 30 inch behemoth, this is the time to be here.

Sockeye Salmon begin to spawn in late August and through September, making the chances of having an epic day of trout fishing, a very real possibility.

September fishing in Alaska is a great time to learn how to fly fish, especially if you’ve never tried it before. The techniques we use during this time are quite easy and you will quickly gain confidence with the technique. You’ll catch loads of fish in September and you will by-far create some of the best memories possible.

If you’re lucky enough to be on the Kenai River during a Pink Year (even years 2018, 2020, 2022…) when Pink Salmon spawn, you’ll be amazed at how far you can float the river and continuously catch big Rainbow Trout after Big Rainbow Trout.

Even if it’s not a “Pink Year,” there will still be plenty of Sockeye Salmon spawning with hosts of Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden gorging themselves on their eggs all around them from Cooper Landing to Sterling and towards stretches of river in Soldotna. All you need to do is drift a painted bead through a set of spawning Sockeye Salmon and you’ll have very good odds of hooking up with a Rainbow Trout or Dolly Varden.

Aside from Rainbow Trout fishing being the best it will be in September, the middle of the month (September 10th or so and on), the second run of Silver Salmon are piling into the river. These bigger fish are very aggressive and may even chase your fly or spinner to the tip of your rod at the boat!

If your arm isn’t sore from fighting so many trout, you love fishing for feisty Silvers! Fish in the 8-15 lb range will put even the best of equipment to the test.

Not only do Silvers aggressively strike a fly in September, you will have a chance at catching multiple fish that are known for their acrobatic jumps and speedy runs.

Some of the best fishing in Alaska occurs in September. Rainbow Trout/Dolly Varden fishing hits peak levels. Silver Salmon fishing also hits near peak levels, making September one of the best times of year to fish for Silvers. Ocean fishing can also be excellent with lots and lots of Silvers present in the oceans. The best trout fishing is done this time of year with beads or egg-imitation flies. Millions of Sockeye Salmon and Pink Salmon (even years) spawn heavily this time of year.
