WHAT TO WEAR FISHING IN ALASKA

PACKING LIST FOR YOUR FISHING TRIP TO ALASKA

The old saying “if you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes” rings true in Alaska. On many days in Cooper Landing, Alaska, we can experience all 4 seasons in one day. Dressing and planning appropriately ensures that you’ll get the absolute most out of every day. Preparation means you won’t lose valuable time on your trip to Alaska.

Even though it can get quite cold here in the winter, the summer months can be mild with high temperatures in the 60s and 70s, but mornings can start out in the 30s and 40s, so looking at the high temperatures can be deceptive. Mild summer temperatures in Alaska can also be accompanied by rain and fits of cold snaps, so packing for an Alaskan adventure can be challenging to say the least.

When figuring out what to wear salmon fishing in Alaska, trying to cover all the possibilities doesn't mean you need to pack your entire closet. Our Kenai River Fishing Guides have put together a little packing list of essentials to help you get through a solid week of fishing and adventuring in our great state.

What to wear in Alaska how to dress

We jokingly tell our clients to prepare for weather between the 30s and 80s while fishing with us. It seems a little extreme, but it can feel pretty darn cold or pretty darn hot out there at times. You will find that most, if not all of the items we recommend are made from synthetic materials. Synthetic materials, unlike cotton, do not hold water, dry quickly and are designed to breathe. They say "Cotton Kills," and nowhere is this more true than in Alaska.

In addition to weather considerations, it is also important to be aware that some parts of Alaska, even here in Cooper Landing, can be quite "buggy." Mosquitos and other biting insects are common and can get annoying. Long-sleeve "bug proof," synthetic t-shirts and pants are very versatile and essential to a comfortable experience in Alaska.
