May in Alaska is when the rivers are starting to come to life with fresh runs of KIng Salmon and eager anglers and fishing guides looking to hit the rivers after a long winter WITH HOPES OF LANDING A BIG FISH!
May is also the time of year when the weather finally starts to break. The grass is beginning to turn green and the migratory birds return to their nesting grounds.
ALASKA FISHING IN MAY
There is so much build-up to fishing in May. The long Alaska winters and cabin fever that sets in leads to nights longing to get back on the water to fish. May offers the first real chance to get out and fish the rivers of Alaska for the first migratory fish of the season. We can’t wait get out on the water for some of our first river charters of the season!
The fishing season for King Salmon on the Kasilof River typically gets into full swing after the 15th of May. We offer both Spey Fishing and Conventional fishing for King Salmon in both May and June. There won’t be any fishing this time of year in Cooper Landing or Sterling, but we do fish on the Kasilof River quite extensively in May.
If you are fishing in Alaska in May, chances are that you will often feel like you have the river to yourselves as the tourist season has not quite kicked into full-swing.
King Salmon in May typically run between 10-25lbs with Kings upwards of 30lbs mixed in. The water is typically shallower with lower flows making for both enjoyable boat and wade fishing on the Kasilof River.
The best fishing in May in Alaska starts around the 15th when the first run of King Salmon begin to show up in the rivers and Ocean fishing is just starting to kick off.
