fishing in alaska: where to fish (Ocean, River, Stream or Lake?)

what is the best tour for you?

Is your thing is to try to fill the freezer? Or to have a picturesque mountain landscape as your back drop fly fishing on the Kenai River? You can choose to do one or all of the above on a typical fishing trip to Alaska.

Ocean Fishing in Alaska is known for taking home sheer poundage of fish. Halibut, Rock Fish and Salmon are popular species to target when ocean fishing out of Seward, Homer or Whittier. Halibut Charters can yield 50lbs and up per angler per trip.

River Fishing in Alaska for salmon, trout and other fish species can involve fly fishing and conventional fishing techniques. Check out our information on Kenai River Fishing Trips. This includes more specific run times and up-to-date fishing reports for the best Alaska Fishing Trips. Our Alaska Salmon Fishing Guides are know these rivers like the back of their hands!

If you are looking to harvest fish on a river tour, be sure to arrive on an Alaska Salmon Fishing Trip during the peak salmon runs. This is when fish are at their freshest. Places like Cooper Landing on the Kenai River are a great option for this. Trout/Dolly Varden/Char and Steelhead should not be harvested as they spawn annually and are wild/not hatchery fish. We have some of the best Alaskan Salmon Fishing Guides on the entire river!

Stream Fishing Trips in Alaska is very similar to River Fishing in Alaska. Kenai River Fishing Trips are essentially what you would expect on your stream fishing trip; however, you may not be using a boat. You will typically do walk-in trips on smaller streams and tributaries. Pay very close attention to Salmon and Trout fishing regulations. There are lots of small tributaries, especially those of the Kenai River where it is illegal to target, remove from water and harvest Pacific Salmon. Rainbow Trout/Dolly Varden/Char regulations are also strict here as well. Check out our information on Kenai River Fishing Trips for more specific run times for Stream Fishing in Alaska. Alaska Salmon Fishing Trips can vary in streams, so be sure if you are targeting salmon to check the regulations.

A great cheap trip involves fishing in Alaska on the roadside streams of the Kenai Peninsula. The streams and rivers around the Susitna River drainage are also great DIY trips. These rivers and lakes are also for bear viewing and other Alaskan adventures.

Lake Fishing Trips in Alaska is something a lot of anglers don’t think about when planning an Alaska fishing getaway. Alaska has thousands of lakes with lots and lots of game fish. Some lakes in Alaska have these fish species:

  • Northern Pike

  • Lake Trout

  • Rainbow Trout

  • Arctic Char

  • Arctic Grayling

  • Salmon

  • Burbot and more!

Fishing on lakes can be diverse as well. Alaska Fly-In fishing trips often fly to lakes with cabins and water craft for personal use. Many lakes are also accessible by road. This offers walk-in fishing opportunities. Aside from Spring, Summer and Fall fishing, lakes in Alaska also offer ice fishing. This is a great winter activity for visitors and Alaskan residents during the short days and long nights.

FLY FISHING VS. CONVENTIONAL FISHING TOURS IN ALASKA

If you know when you want to take a fishing trip to Alaska, you can decide how you want to fish. If you are looking to go ice fishing, you would come in the winter. But what about methods used to catch fish during other seasons?

FLY FISHING trips IN ALASKA FOR SALMON & TROUT

Alaska Fishing Trips

Alaska is known for the world-class fly fishing it has to offer. Many visitors take a fishing trip to Alaska to fly fish. Others can be intimidated if they’ve never done it before. If you’ve ever watched “A River Runs Through It”, you likely picture Brad Pitt casting as far as he can with grace and finesse and think, “I could never cast like that, much less catch a fish on a fly rod!” If you book Alaska Fly Fishing Packages, your guide will help you learn if you are new to the sport.

The Fly Fishing methods used in Alaska on the Kenai River can be quite simple. They are very suitable for beginners and experts. Alaska is a great place to learn fly fishing.

FLY FISHING OPTIONS:

Conventional Fishing CHARTERS in alaska

Most anglers are comfortable with “conventional fishing methods.” These methods include:

  • Casting spinners with a spinning rod

  • Using bait under a bobber

  • Back-trolling with casting rods

Deep Sea fishing in Trips in Alaska will use shorter “halibut” and salmon rods. These rods are for trolling or dropping bait to the bottom. Large level-wind reels and short bait casting rods are the norm here.

Halibut fishing trips in Alaska

Anglers fishing rivers, lakes and streams can use spinning rods and spinning reels. Some Alaska fishing, like on the Kenai and Kasilof will be done with “back trolling” techniques. This is where your fishing guide will troll lures with bait casting rods and level-wind reels. Many of our trips with our Alaska Salmon Fishing Guides use conventional fishing gear.

Conventional fishing methods in Alaska have strict rules about hook size and gap, bait restrictions, etc… must be strictly followed.

CONVENTIONAL ALASKA FISHING OPTIONS:

  • Deep Sea Rod and Reel

  • River Baitcasting and Spin Fishing

  • Stream Baitcasting and Spin Fishing

  • River “Back-Trolling”

  • Lake Trolling

  • Lake Spinning

  • Lake Baitcasting

HARVESTING FISH VS. CATCH AND RELEASE FOR ALASKA FISHING:
WHAT FISH CAN YOU KEEP IN ALASKA?

A lot of anglers overlook what species of fish are available for harvest and which species are legally or ethically catch and release only. It is very important to follow Alaska Fish and Game Laws. Local ethics are important when it comes to fishing and harvesting fish in Alaska. Some species just aren’t normally harvested. Even though the regulations allow for harvest.

Most Salmon Species have harvest seasons and should be harvested ethically at their peak of freshness. Harvesting aged or older spawning salmon takes salmon off of the spawning beds. It also may result in harvesting inedible fish. This wastes a valuable resource. Our Alaska Salmon Fishing Guides know the rules and regulations well and will keep you up to date with the latest salmon fishing regulations.

Alaska Fishing for Trout species like Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Arctic Char and Grayling will have seasons for harvest on rivers, lakes and streams. However, in areas where they are wild (like here on the Kenai River), locals refuse to harvest them. It is frowned-upon to harvest them. The Kenai River is not stocked and wild stocks of fish are rare in today’s world. They are also highly valuable to the fishery and the local economy. Trophy fish are valued, so catch and release is advised.

If anglers wish to ethically harvest Salmon, Halibut and Rock Fish when they are fresh, guides and fishing charters will fillet them for you. There are local services that will process fish. They will portion, vacuum seal, deep freeze and ship them to your house.
