October Guided Fly Fishing on the Kenai River

Fishing the Kenai River near Cooper Landing, Alaska in October

Taking a fishing trip on the world-famous Kenai River in Alaska during the month of October can provide some of the best experiences this river has to offer. Most Kenai River fishing guides have ended their seasons, but Cooper Landing Fishing Guide, LLC is still on the water!

With less fishing guides on the water, in October and fewer recreational anglers around, the chance at your own bank and hours of uninterrupted fishing are great.

Whether you’re into catching big Rainbow Trout or searching for feisty, sea-run Silver Salmon (Coho Salmon), the Kenai River really shines during this month.

Though the Kenai River lends itself to all sorts of fly fishing techniques, October is great for beginner fly anglers all the way up to seasoned professional anglers. This is the preferred time of year for Kenai River fishing guides to spend time fishing on their own. If fishing guides prefer this time of year to fish, shouldn’t you?

Though the weather can be unpredictable near Cooper Landing and the Kenai Peninsula at times, the conditions on the Kenai River are ideal for those seeking more solitude and great wading conditions.

An increasingly-popular method for this time of year is using two-handed fly rods, or Spey rods to fish for both large Rainbow Trout and Silver Salmon with big flies. Spey fishing is a relaxing way to present a fly at great distances with minimal effort.

The methodical presentation with two-handed rods (Spey rods) can be quite easy to learn. Most new to the method can pick up very useful casts and presentation styles within a half an hour or so. Not many Kenai River fishing guides offer Spey casting instruction, but we are well-known for our ability to get people into fish in a short time with these rods.

As the air temperature begins to drop and the Kenai River recedes towards its winter flows, more and more banks are exposed, offering better wading opportunities. The ability to wade fish this time of year means anglers can more specifically target their species of choice.

There’s nothing more rewarding than picking apart a stretch of water on foot with a fly rod on the Kenai River. Being able to take an educated guess as to the likely holding area for a large Rainbow Trout or a feisty Coho Salmon is often rewarded with a big tug!

Whether stripping flies for Silver Salmon or swinging flies on Spey rods for that personal-best Rainbow Trout, your ideal fishing experience awaits!
